Chivas Strike Early, Shut Out América in Oakland

Chivas needed only 23 minutes to seize control of Sunday night’s El Clásico de México.

Ángel Sepúlveda scored twice in the opening half, and Guadalajara held on for a 2-0 victory over Club América at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in front of more than 60,000 fans.

The match, part of Tour Rebaño 2026, carried the edge and emotion expected from Mexico’s most recognizable rivalry. Although it was an international friendly, neither side treated the occasion lightly.

Chivas came out with greater urgency and made its pressure count in the 13th minute. Sepúlveda found the breakthrough, giving Guadalajara an early advantage and energizing the Chivahermanos throughout the stadium.

Ten minutes later, he struck again.

The second goal put América in a difficult position before halftime and gave Chivas the cushion it needed to manage the remainder of the match. Sepúlveda’s brace ultimately became the defining moment of the night.

América attempted to respond, but Guadalajara’s defensive shape limited the club’s chances in the final third. Chivas controlled the tempo for long stretches, slowing the match when necessary and protecting its two-goal lead.

The intensity never disappeared. Hard challenges and heated exchanges reflected the rivalry’s history, with both teams competing as though more than a friendly result were at stake. The physical play kept the crowd engaged even as Chivas maintained control on the scoreboard.

For Guadalajara, the victory offered another memorable result against its biggest rival and provided valuable minutes for younger players. Head coach Gabriel Milito’s side showed composure after building its early lead, refusing to allow América back into the match.

The setting added to the occasion. The Coliseum was filled with supporters from both clubs, underscoring the deep connection Mexican soccer has with fans across Northern California. Chivas and América turned the Oakland stop on their tour into a full-scale rivalry event.

By the final whistle, the result was clear: Chivas had done its damage early and defended its advantage the rest of the way.

Sepúlveda supplied the goals. Guadalajara supplied the discipline. América left Oakland without one.

FINAL: Chivas de Guadalajara 2, Club América 0
